Posted by: bla on April 27, 2004 12:57 PM

hey bla i'll give you the fact that its not a sign of hip hop but its a long running portion of it and is also an art form. it takes a lot of skill and ability to draw many of the pieces especially when its done in just a few hours on a wall or a train with such detail.

Posted by: ZEPHYR on April 28, 2004 03:59 PM

I'm a design student and i'm designing an interactive gallery on graffiti in my local town. Are there any more graffiti / graphic design sites out there? If you know of any could you get back to me?

cheers

Posted by: Danny on May 6, 2004 04:41 AM

yo,
for real, graffiti is straight from the streets. I dont know if it exactly represents hip hop, but it definately helps express and promote the culture. It played a major role in the upcoming of hip hop. Keep it going, just dont get caught. LOLZ

Hip Hop is a modern renaissance...all ages of history have had their major sociological upheavals....marked by the "writing on the wall"....ever heard everything is in cycles? Although they weren’t called by the same names...graffiti has always been ....hip hop has always been. We who call ourselves of hip hop have always been...and so have those against us.

Both sides of artists have great art alike but when you merge the two and stop trying to prove to one another who's best is the day you should see Fantastic artwork. As Hip Hop is or one of the biggest selling music genres small bedroom companies can blow into large corp juggernaughts....wooohooo

Posted by: Complex on July 17, 2005 11:15 AM

from what iv read your all a bunch of fairy's.People wanting to get into the scene should reconsider. Graffiti is not a hobby or somthing you can just stroll into or do on weekends, it is a lifestyle.

People in the scene are not nice people, most are drugg addicted petty criminals who have nothing to loose. I have lost too many friends to this scene to continue in it, two years ago the scene had me at rock bottom putting oxy in my arm. Dont even try kidding yourself that your in it for the "art". 95% of people are in the scene for fame. The cost for fame, having to watch your back constantly cause some crazy yahoo took you capping him seriously, the chance of real hard jail time, exposure to the drug and gang scene's. even the strongest willed people in this scene fall victem to its self destruction.

Growing skills, dat where's it at? Any aestheticly pleasing workz whether they be da graph live or movin some pixalated mind bending formula, if it aint love you feelin, then healin' it's essential, mental agrivation shows us what ya been through!

Love is truth all else is an illusion- but hey its all love!!!

Posted by: tittyass on September 20, 2005 02:48 PM

hey people,
so i'm also a design student and i'm writing a paper on the graffiti influence on graphic design. but i'm curious what you guys think about this idea. do you think that graffiti merging with design is trying to fill the need for human connection? or spontaneity? because graffiti is obviously illegal and filled with emotion, movement, and human elements? and graphic design right now is mechanical and computerized?

let me know.

Posted by: ama on October 20, 2005 07:56 AM

design is not monolithic. like music, movies, or any other artform... there are a few mainstream styles, and a lot of little subgenres. graffiti is a subgenre of design. its influence on design has been one of introducing a little extra spontaneity, creative layering, and ruffness, if you know what i mean. graffiti does a lot with limited colors.

i think graffiti has been much more influential in an aesthetic way, rather than a social way. i mean, the corporations who use graffiti designs are trying to sell products. these companies aren't trying to promote the lifestyle of a graffiti artist. rather, they are simply coopting the superficial manifestations of graffiti.

Posted by: eric on October 20, 2005 01:39 PM

also, graffiti puts an emphasis on one-of-a-kind fonts. graffiti takes the idea of a font-as-design to another level.

Posted by: eric on October 20, 2005 01:41 PM

What do you mean "try to kid myself i'm in it for the art". Screw that, just because you didn't have the will power to not put needles in YOUR vein dont mean shit to me or the rest of the world. LIFE is HARD get used to it. Ive been into graff now for almost 13 years , and have come up nicely in the art world, I'm not from the hood, neither are my friends. I grew up across from the beach surfing, and i bust out shit that'll blow ur mind. So respect what it is ART. Graff is a hobby, its a lifestyle, its totally individual, unless your copying someones shit, and most of all its fun! just remember that, and respect that it is what YOU make it.

Ayo.
Im fro Aotearoa.
I have been a Graffiti writer for the past 5 years.
I am also a Graphic Design Student.
Graffiti is about putting a concept onto a wall or a freestyled design off ya head.
I am doing alot of design projects like clothing for example where I blur the lines between design and graff. Its one thing to sell out to the industry, its another thing to open theyre eyes!
Bring graffiti art into the norm, stop the stereotyping, graff is expression!
Stop hating on designers, end the war on writing, and follow your heart.

Graffiti

Nobody, not even me can explain the true meaning of Graffiti. It is different to every person, each with a different opinion. I am not one to say what Graffiti is, in fact nobody is. Graffiti will always be present, just like birth and death. Painting over it will only stop it temporarally, either its two days or two years. It will return.

For those who are doing research on Graffiti, here is a site packed full of it:

KRS1 says writing is one of the elements of hip hop, if you dont agree or know KRS1 your pprobably sitting ifront of a G4 wearing black. Im a designer too damn it (we all make mistakes) the difference is one designs got client and cash the other just you...one is art one is design, one has a target market, the other doesnt need marketing. Good designs a dime a dozen, all the rich kids are doin it now days. When I say Im a designer the response is always.COOOL! Art is now seen on white walls, nothin new comin out. the street is the only place we can speak to our own. takin back the streets from the media magnates .... getting a bit carried away but you get the drift.

Posted by: elanONE on May 31, 2006 03:21 PM

Ya'll who think graffiti is shit don't know what you're talking about. Graffiti and hip-hop are definitely related, though they do not equal each other. Perhaps, as "bla" so "gracefully" put it, graffiti may have been around before hip-hop came, but things EVOLVE over time. If you gits were mature enough you'd see that at this day in age, they have become two things grouped in the same category. Graffiti represents all things hip-hop; it is an element of hip-hop. It's beautiful and takes great skill to do it well. Graffiti is SICK and I have mad love for it. Those who view graffiti as vandalism are just denying the fact that perhaps hip-hop is emerging in this world and they cannot accept that graffiti is a true art form. If you think it's garbage, let's see you try to tag up a wall 20 by 50 feet and see how well you do.

Overall, I give props to all graffiti artists, including myself. It isn't something to represent the "ghetto"; it is part of the hip-hop culture, a culture emerging and making a breakthrough in everyday society.

And, (sorry if this isn't....dignified)FUCK ALL YA'LL WHO THINK YA'LL SO HARD AND STAY TALKING SHIT ABOUT GRAFFITI. Grow up and if it bothers you so much just ignore it; why would you even come on this site?

Posted by: chinkyx3s on June 1, 2006 02:48 PM
