MTV Freestyle Battle
To what end is the world now coming?
In a sign of our times, MTV staged it's first ever MC freestyle battle on May 17. The event was hosted by a cadre of celebrities, including judges Method Man, Ludacris, and the president of Def Jam. The DJs were Clue (who seemed to be more of a host) and Kid Capri. Good old Sway (from the Wake Up Show) was the referee. And the whole thing was overseen by Carson Daly and some hot female whose name I never caught (too busy checkin' her out).
The grand prize was the biggest I've ever heard of: $25,000 and a Def Jam recording contract (including a spot on the summer tour and a character in the Def Jam video game... woah).
The qualifying rounds started with about 1000 contestants. By the main quarterfinal round, things definitely heated up and all the quarterfinal rounds I saw on the TV were mostly quality, with a notable absence of the usual male sexual insecurity and latent-homo thing going on. There were lots of fat disses, some crack disses, a few race/ethnic disses, and a few sperm comments.
But after the quarters, the rebroadcast I was watching got pretty heavily munched in the editing room. In spite of the fact that one of the competitors, Locksmith, swore numerous times in the quarters (and won), two or three MCs were disqualified in the semis for swearing. Disqualified?!?! What?!?! You can make a comment about inseminating your competitors mother... but you can't use slang for body parts and functions? I guess I was mostly surprised the competitors couldn't stop swearing after Sway explicity and emphatically warned them.
Another suspicious discrepancy was the judging. Meth and Luda seemed to have their minds made up from the git go. Oh and... that other judge sitting in between them... just happened to be the fucking president of the company awarding the grand prize. Let's think about this: two Def Jam recording artists and the President of Def Jam were judging the battle.
Hmm... conflict of interest?
Now I gotta admit... this MTV battle was actually better than a lot of battles I've seen. The whole operation was real organized. Everyone was sober. Competitors seemed like good sports. And the crowd only exerted itself when necessary and I didn't hear anyone call the white MC an "Eminem". But here's where I've got a problem (I've gotta have some sort of problem... or else there wouldn't be an article here)...
MTV has taken a grassroots subcultural phenomenon and turned it into a national media spectacle, somewhat akin to pro wrestling. But unlike pro wrestling, in MC battling they dispense with any sort of real action (read: fake wrestling) and the competition is entirely composed of slanderous sound bites (the sort normally reserved for in between wrestling matches). The MTV battle dispensed with the wrestling and replaced it with layer upon layer of mindless host banter. The competitors seemed almost incidental... as if they were on a TV game show. Wait... they were.
Fortunately, MC battling has none of the inherent appeal of pro wrestling: battle MCs have little of the tongue-in-cheek spirit common in wrestlers. And thus we need not worry about the prospect of weekly MC battles on MTV and the degradation of our cherished institution. The main problem with having MC battles on MTV is not that MTV has done a poor job coopting hip hop's most sacred tradition. The problem is simply that freestyle battling doesn't hold up to the light of day.
And this is because the entire foundation of institutionalized, sanctioned freestyle battling is bullshit. It is a desperate move on the part of hip hop posterity to recapture the glory of spontaneous, grassroots community dynamics. Battling was never meant to go past the street corner or the school yard, or the prison yard, or smokey late-night clubs... because battling is for the desperate. Battling is a last resort. Battling is a product of limited resources and dog-eat-dog competition.
When asked why he voted for Reign Man (the eventual winner from Philly), Meth responded, "I voted for Reign Man cuz his style is dirty. He dirty just like me." On his MTV web profile, Reign Man puts down his location as "the 'hood" rather than Philly. When asked by Carson Daly -- after winning the finals -- what he would buy with the money, Reign Man seemed thrown off by the question and said "I don't know... a house or something."
Reign Man didn't win the battle because he won some sort of objective contest of skill... Reign Man won because he had chemistry with Def Jam. Ultimately, a battle is not won... it is judged. The crowd and the judges are the real stars of the show.

ignore the email address its my gilffriends. all the mc's had a list of swear words they could not say. yeah meth was feelin reign man but did you see when nite was disqualified which was a shame because that battle would have been crazy if it went, the three judges wanted her to stay. reign man could have lost agaisnt her but he didnt. reign man can battle, he's talented where as some of the others WACK!. that marvin guy shit, tru mack shit, red dot wasnt anything special either. why shouldnt reign man have won? locksmith was just as good but but oh well. oh and bye the way the judges had no say in the final battle it went to public vote.
That show was aight, i must agree there was some WACK mcs there, i also think that is NITE hadnt broke the rules then she would of won, well she still got an meeting with Deff Jam out of it, i think that REIGN MAN's style was a bit to similar to 50 Cents for my liking, i thought that LOCKSMITH had a good flow and will go far.

Here are some of my thoughts. Overall I thought that it was very entertaining from the quarter-finals on. When I first heard about the MTV battle, I thought it was going to be corny. But it was good. There were real emcees up there. The only thing that I didn't like about it is that I felt that it was overhosted, especially towards the end. I was waiting for Locksmith and Reign Man to go at it, but they were just talking about a bunch of B.S. But anyway, Nite would have won it all if she didn't get disqualified for saying whatever she said. Although I thought that Reign Man was good, I don't see how he beat Locksmith. He had him beat hands down. His punchlines were so dope.

reignman vs nite should have been the final as locksmith did not test reignman at all.
