Tavis Smiley Presents...

In case you don't know, Tavis Smiley is the man. And if you want proof of this, check out the latest Tavis Smiley Presents event. Held in Miami, the symposium was called State of the Black Union: Strengthening the Black Family – Preserving the African American Imprint on America. And it lasted 8 jam-packed hours. And you can view the program in its ENTIRETY (part 1 & 2) at C-Span.org. Big up to C-Span.org!!!

Now I must admit I haven't watched all 8 hours. But, from what I did watch, I would say it is one of the most thorough, balanced, and inspiring symposiums I have seen. Featuring a Who's Who of Black thought, spirituality, education, business, and leadership, Tavis did a great job.

At a time when national leadership seems scarce -- not just Black leadership, but all leadership -- it is heartening to know that Tavis can bring together so much wisdom on one stage. Every single one of the guests shared indispensible words of wisdom. And in spite of the fact that it was a relatively low-profile event, with only a small C-Span audience, the video archive is available for you to watch any time at C-Span.org.

Is it possible to get a video or transcript of this broadcast (State of the Black Union...)if one missed it?

Thanks.

i work for a family support center through Family resouces and i would love to have the transcripts for 2-28-04, i watched it and i love everything about it, so much information we need to keep inside our heads and then pass it along. working with black families i find that this type of info. is needed badly. and for the next year PLEASE consider comming Pittsburgh Pa. even if you don't i'm working on family resources to come and be apart of this, Dr. Walter Smith should be there and me(smile)i hope.

The "State of The Black Family" was the most informative TV program I've viewed in quite a long time. I'm somewhat afraid that most of the individuals who could benefit from this wealth of information, were not tuned in to C-Span to catch Tavis and his distinguished guest. I would like to suggest a format by which the information could reach those of us who may not watch c-span; If we could replace "movie previews" with a shorter version of this info, that would be the perfect way to reach the masses of our people.

ECONIMIC EMPOWERMENT

Tavis Smiley praises C-SPAN over 25 times in two minutes.

C-SPAN has carried this event for the last 7 years.

SUPPORT MORE C-SPAN...

www.cspanjunkies.org

To: U.S. Congress and the FCC

We, the undersigned, while believing in the importance of a Free Market and Freedom of Speech, also believe in the importance of The Public Airwaves to be used as mandated by the FCC "...In the Public Interest, Necessity, and Convenience." We believe the use of The Public Airwaves is crucial to spread knowledge, culture, and civics. We therefore write to petition you to consider major changes in the allocation of the Broadcast Spectrum.

The Public Airwaves are a Vast Toxic Wasteland.
Congress needs to hold hearing on THE STATE OF THE AIRWAVES.
They would find:

1) That the Broadcast and Cable companies have not lived up to using the Public Airwaves, as the FCC mandated "... in the spirit of Public Interest, Necessity, and Convenience."

2) That the FCC and Congress have " given away, rent free", the Public Airwaves.

3) That the Broadcast and Cable companies have "... made so much money doing IT'S worst, IT can't afford to do better."

In the 1990's the FCC, with much support from the Congress, auctioned off portions of the Broadcast Spectrum. One portion of the Spectrum that was being auctioned would potentially reach 16 million customers (citizens). Almost as many people as the population of the state of Texas.

That particular portion sold for $3.00. Three dollars! When former FCC chairman Reed was asked to comment, he said "...I wish I had three dollars".

This cavalier policy and stewardship of the Public Airwaves has been good for the Broadcast and Cable companies, and their stock holders. And absolutely hideous for Civics, Public Affairs, and Democracy.

Before 2009, the FCC will give away more of the Public Airwaves, worth between 80-100 billion dollars. Once again, the Public will be outside, looking in, as the Broadcast Spectrum goes to the highest campaign contributors.

What does the Public receive from the License holders, for their use of the Broadcast Spectrum? Inexpensive Cable and Satellite packages? Intellectually stimulating programs broadcast into our homes at no charge? Choices and Diversity? Event coverage and programming with redeemable qualities? Or is it "...500 channels and still there's nothing worth watching".

There are many Independent, Grassroots, and Localized ways to use the Broadcast Spectrum. But on the National level, the Country needs more Public affairs, more Civics. The unedited, undefiled paradigm C-SPAN has perfected, is the only thing We can all agree on. It promotes Democracy and Participation. Not even the corporate media conglomerates can be against Democracy.

We therefore call on the Congress, and the FCC, to hold hearings on the benefits of more C-SPAN. And to take steps to move forward with the endeavor of creating more C-SPAN Companion Networks. When there is more than enough Broadcast Spectrum to dedicate to Civics, Culture, History and Democracy, We should not allow greed to get in the way of the Public Interest, Necessity and Convenience.

Put the Public back in the Public Airwaves.

I am mixed race-African Portuguese. I teach in a school in a suburb next to Boston that does not have a single person of color in any staff position. The race/cultural awarenss/education is minimal. The white students 90% are incredibly ignorant [ I teach history and "integrate" the still minimalized African and African-American History into all my lessons. After watching the
State of Black America on C-SPAN,I realized how little anti-racism awareness there is in the majority of whites in this country. As a 60's activist I would have been appalled if I knew where we would be as a country over 40 years later. The Covenant is inspiring but the current reality is very depressing. Not an excuse or being a victim..just an emotional sharing. Peace, Jim

BROTHER SMILEY,
IT IS WITH GREAT PRIDE THAT I SAT WITH MY 14YR OLD DAUGHTER, MY WIFE OF 16 YEARS, AND MY GRAND BOYS, AND WATCHED YOUR SHOW, THE STATE OF BLACK AMERICA! THIS KIND OF FORM IS NEEDED ON A REGULAR BASIS. IT TAKES A DEGREE OF GUTS TO PUT INTO PLACE A THINK TANK SUCH AS HELD ON SAT. 2/25/06. I WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS MY THANKS AND GRATITUDE TO ALL OF YOUR WELL VERSED SPEAKERS.
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU DO A SHOW WITH COMMON EVERY DAY FOLK WHO ARE FEELING THE BITE OF CONDITIONS OF INNER CITY LIFE OF ATLANTA, GA. THOSE WHO ARE IN RURAL SOUTH GA. IT IS THESE WHO CRY OUT FOR HELP. I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM THAT SINGLE MOTHER WHO HAS TO WORK TWO JOBS TO TAKE CARE OF HER CHILDREN AND STILL THAT IS NOT ENOUGH. TALK TO THAT HUSBAN AND WIFE WHO WITH TWO INCOMES STILL CAN NOT HARDLY MAKE IT. IT IS GOOD TO HAVE THOSE WHO HAVE MADE IT, BUT WE NEED TO HEAR FROM THOSE WHO ARE STILL ON THE LOW END OF THE POLE. IT WOULD BE TO OUR ADVANTAGE TO COMBINE THESE GROUPS INTO ONE FORM, AND THEN LET US TOGETHER COME UP WITH WORKABLE SOLUTIONS THAT WILL BENIFIT THE MASSES.
BROTHER SMILEY KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. LET GOD BE THE HEAD IN YOUR LIFE, AND AND KEEP REACHING FOR THE STARS. I BELIEVE THAT GOD HAS CHARGED YOU WITH THIS TASK OF SOUNDING THE ALARM. YOU MUST CONTINUE! WE MUST HEAR THE TRUTH!

Tavis,

Thank you. Thank you. It's so wonderful that you bring our people together. Don't stop the wonderful work you do!

Posted by: Verna Edwards on March 7, 2006 10:06 AM

Mr. Tavis Smiely the program concerning the State of Black America was excellent. However, nothing will fully change until the people change as stated in the bible, 2 Chronicles 7:14 "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I (God) will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

So until we change our way of thinking and living nothing will change.

Great program!!!

Theworld is a crazy place it’s a good thing God has filled us with his grace. Godtakes us through it all, taking each and everyone us down many differentpaths. He helps us through pain, heguides us through our fears, and he puts us through hurt, which sometimescauses tears. Only God knows just how much we can take he takes us throughrough times but he won’t let us break. Sometimes your going to feel likenothing seems to go your way but don’t worry it is only a test God wants oneday to be able to put all our souls at rest. So when your are feeling down andout you will find out all you have to do is pray, trust, and believe in God andkeep the faith.

Timeto rally the troops its time for gods children to regroup
Itstime to bring the truth to the light and expose lies of our country tonight Ourgovernment so corrupt with the people in power who don’t give up. Investing inwealth and caring less about our countries health. The United States a superpower but they use their power traveling from place to place to conquer anddevour this why the terrorist hit the tower. A country built on injustice gun steel in germs leaves many of godschildren buried or on some form of crutches. Think about the United States many forget how the people in chargeperpetrate saying what they have to do to get your vote living there lives on adifferent agenda Really not working towards a better life for all justenforcing there new world order by any means necessary. The evil is trying its best to win makingpeople think love and god can’t change the world just look at what happen whenthe people try to make a stand. Growingup in this world of stress some kids growing with the weight of the world ontheir chest growing up not knowing they’re truly blessed. We the people can make a change its not atime for killing its time for us to pray for a purpose so god can start thehealing and help us maintain. Put yourpride and beliefs a side and let your heart and faith in god be yourguide. We have to work together it’sthe only way our days will get better so know this movement is not based on thecolor of your skin it built on the strength that god wants love to win. You can make a difference just look atpeople like Martin Luther King for instance against all odds he got messageacross he did gods will because he knew no man or woman can judge because heknew God would judge all in the end. Its also a time for the churches to unitewhy continue to bicker over religion if we all teach and preach love. Learningto love one another as much as god loves you is what God wants from hischildren. All our preachers andteachers can teach us to love in this way but we must come together it is theonly way. We the people can make a stand lets organize a march for love andtake over those people in power only intend to strike us down. Nobody is exempt form what is happening toour world it seems to be taking over a little boys and girls. This is more than a boycott this is anopportunity to work towards Martin Luther King Jr’s Dream of equality and peacefor all so let all unite let our voices and faces be heard and seen. If we continue to be afraid of ourleadership they will lead us in to a world of misery. This march is scheduled for April4, 2007 the day of the assassination of the great Martin Luther King Jrthis is to help symbolize what justice means. This is our chance as a people to take a stand I would love for God tobe the president but we will still live in the flesh so maybe he can help usthrough our prayers so we can pick a new leader who believes that it’s time forlove to take a stand. God has hisgiven his children a mission to love one another as much as God love each and everyoneof us so this will also help confirm that you believe in your heart that whathe teaches can come true. We can makehistory now it is in the hands of you God has given me a vision so that why Isend this message to you. I can’t makethis happen on my own but I believe if we all work together our March for Love will help the lives of many and change our nation forever like only we thepeople can.

State of the Black Union - Strengthing the Black Family, I'm sure was a good event. Along that line, I have been writing as many as possible talk show host to do just that, preserve our family heritage. I have 2 of 3 toddler siblings and the NC Dept of Social Services decided to separate the chldiren by keeping the one taken at birth, 23 months ago with absolutely no reason needed. Yes, NC DHHS has Sovereign Immunity and launched a conspiracy 23 months ago to make alot of money by keeping the siblings a part and selling my grandson off into foster care slavery. NO ONE WANTS TO TAKE ON THE ALMIGHTY DSS and their inhumane practices to steal/abduct families children that your tax dollars pay for!

How can we get a video of the 2006 State of the Black Union?

Posted by: billie capitol on August 24, 2006 06:38 PM

I have friend that this message do not apply. Just the opposite seems to be true A white polish family and many black people I know this do not apply. is this another conspiracy theory that the government out to get us? did you actually send this information out or did someone else just put your name of this peace of information. we should not live by fear but the faith that God is in control of this world and we his children should seek his rule. Have you heard anything about Social Security numbers, African Americans and the 5th digit of your SSN?Supposedly, if you are an African American or a minority, the 5th digit in your SSN is even and odd if you are white!

It has been said if you take a poll, most African Americans will have an even 5th digit. Rumor has it, some companies are looking at potential employees SSN to discriminate. Why not send this email to every African American and Minority that you know! I'm sending this to everyone I know. Mine was even, what's yours?

In our community, we've rallied to get involved with our youth. Each year we receive more interested parents and kids than the previous year. We're all volunteers, we need support on little things that seem to be the hardest to come by. We get our kids involved in sports, while at the same time encourage their academic goals. On an average, we probably spend more quality time with these kids than what they get at home. That seems hard to believe but most of our kids are from single parent homes and need support. Can we get help with uniforms, basketballs, sneakers and other training aides?

I only saw the last 2.5 hours of the synposium. It was fantastic. I was very inspired. I teach child development to preschool teachers and we had a similar conversation in the classroom just today. I love to hear and celebrate what each person on the panel had to say.

Great Job Mr. Smiley. I cannot wait to read your book

our children are dying and we are acting just like scare cowards doing nothing, it is really amazing how we are always ready to go to wars and put our lives on the line for other people but never for us our babies are being killed as if life is going out of style blacks need to protect by not working for a week and we need to have communities meeting in all 50 state and march on washington in protect of our children.

6/28 your program on TV. The talk was about " NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND " with Hilary, Biden, Dodd & five other idiots. The real question should have been " DO ANY OF YOUR CHILD GO TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS ?? I ALREADY PRESUME THE ANSWER TO BE " NO". I am a victim of public school education. The problem is no direction by the teachers, it is not their job & they don't have the time to it. My children all go to private schools, I know why and so do you. But you can't really say why to the under privilaged children and on TV. I would love to talk to you one on one and maybe you can see how to deliver the message to the IDIOTS. Mr Smiley, please don't get caught up in the big boys game and " SELL OUT ". I realize that you have to make money, however you have covered alot of ground to get where you are, DON'T SELL OUT NOW !!!!!
