R.A. The Rugged Man freestyles (6:30)
He's one of those legends that just won't go away. A full 10 years after his would-be debut was shelved by Jive, the Rugged Man finally pulls together his actual debut album, albeit through the indpendent label Nature Sounds.
Die, Rugged Man, Die is a lackluster effort, sprinkled with a few gems such as "Lessons". I wish I could say it is a classic. But it isn't. The problem is not so much the lyrics as it is the beats: they are boring and conventional. These beats lie in stark contrast to an artist whose entire persona is built upon the unexpected and unconventional.
Criticisms aside, Rugged Man is still a legend in my book. If punk rock and hip hop could have a child, it might be R.A. And don't let the inconsistent output fool you... he is capable of sheer brilliance, as witnessed by numerous freestyles and underground classics like "Stanley Kubrick".
There was a lengthy interview accompanying these freestyles, but I'm gonna wait and see if I get any response here before I post it.
