Jeff Chang, 5¢ per page

Not many people know this -- but Jeff Chang is practically my best friend.

Now, please consider the fact that Jeff is best friends with these people...

DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, GrandMaster Flash, Kool DJ AJ, Lucky Strike, The Original Jazzy Jay, Jorge "Fabel" Pabon, Chuck D, Ice Cube, King Tee, Benjamin Melendez, Daude & Aqeela Sherrills, Alex Sanchez, Hank Shocklee, Blackie Mercado (Savage Skulls), Crazy Legs, Doze Green, Richie Perez, Chuck Brown, Charlie Ahearn, Carlos Suarez (Ghetto Brothers), Lady Pink, Uncle Jam's Army, Zephyr, James Bernard, Reginald Dennis, Henry Chalfant, Greg Tate, Harry Allen, Fab 5 Freddy, Bom 5, Baye Adofo, Upski, Bill Stephney, Dante Ross, David Hershkovitz, Spar One, Iz the Wiz and many more.
By virtue of Jeff knowing all these people, it basically means I am the 2nd most well-connected person in hip hop -- after Jeff, of course.

But here's where Trouble Funk hits the scene...

Now, you might think -- by virtue of his being my "practically" best friend -- that Jeff would share an advanced copy of his new book with me. But no. He is making me wait just like all those other chumps out there.

And now I must go on record as saying that Jeff Chang is no longer my best friend. Sorry Jeff, it's your loss.

On the bright side, my new best friend -- Christie "All I wanna do is zoom-a-zoom-zoom-zoom" Z-Pabon -- just sent me extensive secret details about Jeff's new book. Christie recognizes my importance. She knows the value of my opinion in a fast-paced, global economy. She knows I will play a key role in the book's success in some coveted demographics: middle-aged businessmen, homosexuals, Christian fundamentalists, etc.

Alright... enough bullshit... let's get down to business. Here's a sneak preview of the contents, courtesy of my new best friend:

# # # END SNEAK PREVIEW # # #

At 546 pages and $27.95 retail price, Jeff's book is only worth about 5 cents per page. But don't let that fool you! Can't Stop Won't Stop is already a hip hop classic... and I haven't even read it! Don't worry, Christie will be zoom-zooming me a copy as soon as she reads this (probably never). And then we can put my comments in the 2nd edition, right after Adam Mansbach ;)

Or I can just add my comments to a library copy.

Comments

Because you are my best friend, I will disclose to you--and you only--that the reason that I was unable to give you an advanced copy was because it had a whole chapter on how the Chinese invented hip-hop, and then somebody told me I was wrong and I had to dump it. The corrected version should start shipping this week!

This all reminds me of a SpongeBob episode...

GHETTO POETRY

HE AIN'T NEVER LOOKIN' BACK

GIL-T is the link hip-hop was missing. He is a true master of rhythm and word. He's like a criminal on the mic, GIL-T is one thing: Spittin FIRE!!!

Growing up, GIL-T had tremendous musical influences. The first being his mother, the late Laura Nyro. Laura Nyro was a singer and songwriter who wrote hits for the Fifth Dimension [ Wedding Bell Blues ] Three Dog Night [ Eli's Comin' ] Barbara Streisand [Stoney End, Flim Flam Man ] Melissa Manchester and many others. He was also intrigued with the artists appearing on MTV like the Fat Boys, Run DMC and NWA. On any given morning he would wake up to the sounds of his mother playing her piano and writing songs. He followed in her footsteps and started writing poems and songs of his own. He let a few people hear the rhymes he wrote and they encouraged him to continue. Although he was exposed to many forms of music his passion was for hip-hop. Constantly on the road with his mother he moved from State to State eventually ending up in Danbury Connecticut where his mother owned a beautiful house over looking a pond. He didnt have any siblings and never met his biological father but his mother provided him with a healthy and happy home.

At the age of 15 he got into trouble with the law and received 5 years probation. After violating probation he was sent to live with his godparents in Colorado, but this would be short lived. His godparents didnt approve of the music he listened to. When he refused to give up his music he was asked to leave. As a result he ended up back in Danbury where he was faced with all the trouble he had left behind. After violating probation several times he was given one of two choices, an alternative to incarceration program in Upstate New York or Jail. The obvious choice was the program. He entered the program with a chip on his shoulder and a lot on his mind. During this time he learned that his beloved mother had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. This was an especially difficult time for him. Needless to say, as hard as he tried he just couldnt keep himself out of trouble. After 3 months he was kicked out of the program for fighting. His mother then pulled a few strings and got him placed in a facility in Queens New York where he spent most of his time writing rhymes and perfecting his craft. Just when everything seemed to be going well, two counselors at the facility sat him down and told him that his mother had passed away. Devastated he instantly felt a loss that was indescribable. He would cry for what seemed like an eternity. He was allowed to go to his mothers estate to attend a private memorial. In the weeks to follow GIL-T, filled with despair sunk into a deep depression. There was little in the world that he cared about. His best friend was gone. Four months later he left the facility and went to live with close friends of his mothers in Manhattan. During this time he met and starting dating a girl from the seedy lower east Side. At this point, life seemed senseless. Desmond Child, a Laura Nyro fan and famous song writer who wrote hit songs for many artists like Ricky Martin, Bon Jovi, Cher and many others stepped in and tried to turn things around for GIL-T by sending him to College in Florida.

No matter where he went though trouble always seemed to follow. He got in trouble for smoking weed in his room at school, which caused him to be cut off from his funding. When his girl friend came to visit he decided to move back to the lower east side with her. Back in New York with no money he had to find a way to survive. He tried working 9 to 5 but was never able to hold down a job for long. His other alternative was a life of drugs and fast money. During this time he hooked up with a friend in Alphabet City and started selling dope and encountering lots of trouble along the way. Shortly afterwards his relationship ended and he was left without a place to stay. He then went to live with a friend in Jefferson Projects in East Harlem. This was good and bad because now, he had a stable place to live amongst people who cared about him but he was also surrounded by a lot of negativity. As time went on he turned to a life of crime. He developed a callused mentality, which led to a stint on Rikers Island. During his incarceration he kept in touch with a very close friend of his mothers whom he called his nana. He was very close to her and when he was released he went to live with her. He tried to stay away from Harlem and the trouble that came with being there but the streets were calling and he ended up there once again. After violating his probation yet another time he was sent back to Rikers Island but this time when he came home he picked up a legal trade as a barber in Harlem. On down time, he would sit outside of the shop and write rhymes. He joined many cyphers where he showed off his talent as a rapper and as usual people were feeling his style. He decided it was time to lay it down. He started saving his money and was able to go to the studio and record two tracks a month. A year later he had completed an entire album. GIL-T has collaborated with artist: ROBO, GABE THE MESSIAH, MELODIC

Since then he hasn't looked back. Now with his third album "GHETTO POETRY" under his belt, he is focused and ready to take on the world. ARE YOU READY?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
December 1, 2006
INTEGRITY PR ANNOUNCES
AVALON PROMOTIONS
BANDS OF THE WORLD TOUR 2007
Begins its Musical Journey
San Diego,CA

AVALON PROMOTIONS BREAKS

NEW GROUND FOR INDIE MUSIC

TOUR CONCEPT!!!

AVALON PROMOTIONS

BANDS OF THE WORLD TOUR 2007

OTURL CLIENTS DUKE IT OUT
FOR AVALON PROMOTION'S INTERNATIONAL BANDS OF THE WORLD TOUR 2007 COMPETITION

MySpace vs Pub Crawl

The Oturl Group, a marketing media consulting team to clients such as
indie musicians, providing services of streaming media product vendors and the highly popular viral video broadcastings have their hands musically full. Two of their indie rock band clients APE and LOS KARMA, are currently in a heavy heated competition for the top spot of the most talked about new music concert concept to hit in years. AVALON PROMOTIONS BANDS OF THE WORLD TOUR 2007, where unsigned indie bands have been sort after on myspace.com. Little did anyone involved with this project anticipate the incredible responses that would occur through a site that was once utilized as a place to keep in touch with friends and a place to make new friends.
Myspace is now far beyond that. It is a mecca of talented individuals just waiting to be discovered, make a business deal and yes still keep in touch with your buddies and find new ones, but in a whole differnt way.

APE, one of the unsigned indie rock band in the Avalonc ompetition hailing from St. Austell, Cornwall, and a member of myspace, has tackled the leadership position against popular indie band LOS KARMA with a full court press Web 2.0 marketing and communications juggernaut vis-a-vis, a volunteer street-team, trying to shake things up in anticipation of the December 1, 2006 final tally of this competition. December 1,is the last day of band submissions. LOS KARMA, a ska-punk-rock quartet, from Las Playas de Tijuana is surprisingly soaring into National and International acclaim. All this hoopla from one man's dream and intense love of music and a friend site that has become a very friendly business playground has got heads spinning.

Marc Shannon, founder of AVALON PROMOTIONS, a lifelong supporter of indie musicians and good ole fashioned rock em, sock em live music venues, envisioned a month long intense musical jam session in some San Diego warehouse with locally known bands and International indie bands that would never have the opportunity to travel and /or perform in the USA. Marc is making this a reality for these talented individuals. Shannon's plan: four Domestic Indie Bands from Southern California and four International/ Import Indie Bands from around the world will collaborate, picked from the hottest indie talents found on myspace and have them perform in a very unusual underground music pressure cooker in a highly intense performance venue.

Local and International skeptics became supporters as the word spread about this brilliant global talent concept. For the final eight spots on this tour, a team of highly dedicated skilled music industry peeps, marketing and communication pros, became wildly committed to making Marc’s vision a reality. Their mission: create an unprecedented opportunity for eight unsigned bands and watch these talents transform over the course of a mere month into pro performers with an International fan base and the guts to face their own dreams, leave their comfort zones and eventually head toward a year long world tour. The upshot of all this hoolpa- AVALON GRAPHIC PROMOTION recently signed a client contract with The Oturl Group based on LOS KARMA'S widget-marketing vector.

The final four Import bands and the final four Domestic bands will be closely examined after weeks of frantic competition. Over 500 band submissions have entered through myspace trying to get Avalon's pro teams' ears to take a listen, and the myspace members love and loyalties(who have a vote in this process.)The word spread like wild fire as these eager talents began their serious plans for fans and industry supporters. They began generating overwhelming traffic to AVALON GRAPHIC PROMOTIONS web-based online voting site on myspace. Needless to say myspace proved to be a very viable marketing tool that surpassed Marc's and his team's expectations.

The winners of the final round of AVALON'S “Battle of the Fans” will be invited to rehearse, perform and live in AGP’s converted warehouse/loft venue in San Diego from January 1st through January 31st, 2007 for the kick-off of AVALON PROMOTIONS BANDS OF THE WORLD TOUR 2007.

APE, showing they are very clever and motivated, have already gotten local press coverage including The Cornish Guardian, The St Austell Voice, Pirate FM, Atlantic FM, and Here And Now Magazine. Ape is even considering “a naked billboard walk through some towns and cities to gain exposure!” A MUSICAL HAPPENING IS OCCURRING!!!

So,hop a plane, take a train, drive that jeep, get some sleep, for this Music jammin, Drum slammin, Guitar strummin, Ain't no slummin, musical fairy tale created by one man's vision. Shannon has taught the skeptics that there's room enough in our lives to create a magical dream as long as dedication, determination, talent and a hardworking team that never gives up perserveres.

LET'S HELP MAKE THIS MUSIC HAPPENING BECOME A HUGE EVENT. IT WILL PAVE THE WAY FOR OTHER CREATIVE EVENTS BY SHANNON AND OPEN THE TOUGH DOORS INTO THE MUSIC WORLD FOR GIFTED TALENTS JUST WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED.

REALITY HITS: BLACKOUT CREATIONS, LLC, a production company from Seattle,WA, got wind of this whirling dervish phenom and has hopped on board seeing the hugely marketable potential of this concert concept music extravaganza and scheduled to fly into San Diego to follow and document Avalon Bands of the World Tours' contenders every move. Kyle Feria along with his crew will capture the raw "harmonious" footage of all that will be happening during the making of this tour!!!! A DVD will be made available when the whole shebang is over....who knows.... Shannon may have a hit TV show on his hands!!!
